The two most common packing mistakes for a beach holiday: bringing far too many clothes, and miscalculating how many swimsuits you need. This list covers what you'll actually use over a week.
Swimsuits: How Many
For a week away, bring at least two, ideally three. The reason is practical rather than aesthetic: a swimsuit takes 8–12 hours to dry fully, and putting on a damp one is both uncomfortable and hard on the fabric.
A good split: one one-piece (practical for breakfast, beach walks, and the pool bar) and two bikini sets or separates to rotate.
Cover-Ups
A single piece you can throw over your swimsuit makes a big difference without taking up space. A light dress or sarong turns a beach look into something you can wear to a restaurant.
Shoes
Two pairs is enough: one pair of flip-flops or slides for the beach and pool, and one pair of evening sandals. A third pair almost always comes home unworn.
Skin and Sun
- High-factor sunscreen (SPF 30+, ideally 50)
- SPF lip balm
- After-sun moisturiser or aloe vera gel
- Wide-brimmed hat
- Sunglasses
Note: sunscreen damages swim fabric. Apply it, wait a few minutes for it to absorb, and put your swimsuit on afterwards.
Beach Bag Essentials
- Quick-dry towel (microfibre packs far smaller than a standard towel)
- A small waterproof pouch for wet swimwear
- Water bottle
- Book or e-reader
- Power bank
Commonly Forgotten
The small things you learn from experience: hair ties or clips (seawater tangles hair), wet wipes, a small first aid kit (plasters, painkillers), and a spare charging cable.
One more: pack your swimsuit at the top of your case. You don't want to be digging through your luggage when you arrive and want to head straight to the water.
Heading Home
Don't bring swimwear home dirty or damp. Rinse on the last day and dry as much as you can, then pack it separately. Wash and shade-dry as soon as you get home — that last task of the holiday determines how long your swimsuit lasts.
