The most common mistake when buying swimwear online is applying your everyday clothing size directly to a swimsuit. Swim fabric is stretchy and designed to sit close to the body, which makes actual measurements far more reliable than guessing a size. This guide walks you through taking measurements and choosing the right fit.
Before You Measure
Three things matter: keep the tape parallel to the floor and snug but not tight, measure over underwear or bare skin rather than thick clothing, and if possible measure in the morning — body measurements can shift by a few centimetres during the day.
Which Measurements You Need
Bust: Measure around the fullest part of the chest, passing under the arms.
Underbust (band): Measure directly under the bust, around the ribcage. This is the critical measurement for bikini tops.
Waist: Measure at the narrowest point, usually a few centimetres above the navel.
Hips: Measure around the widest part of the hips with feet together.
Size Chart
| Size | Bust (cm) | Waist (cm) | Hips (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 78–82 | 60–64 | 86–90 |
| S | 82–86 | 64–68 | 90–94 |
| M | 86–90 | 68–72 | 94–98 |
| L | 90–95 | 72–77 | 98–103 |
| XL | 95–100 | 77–82 | 103–108 |
If You're Between Two Sizes
This is the most frequent question, and the answer depends on the piece.
For bikini tops, size up. A top that's too tight leaves marks on the shoulders and band, and becomes uncomfortable over a long day.
For bikini bottoms, you can size down — swim fabric relaxes slightly in water, and a bottom that's too loose loses its shape once wet.
For one-pieces, size up. Torso length comes into play here; a one-piece that's too tight pulls at the shoulders and restricts movement. This matters especially if you're taller than 170 cm.
What to Watch by Style
Triangle and tie-side styles are the most forgiving — the ties let you adjust the fit yourself. If you're between sizes, these are the safest choice.
For bandeau styles, the underbust measurement is what matters, not the full bust.
For one-pieces, if your bust and hip measurements fall into different sizes, go with the larger one.
Fabric and Fit Over Time
Quality swim fabric with a high Lycra content may feel slightly snug on the first wear and settle into shape after a few uses. Chlorine, salt, and sun gradually reduce elasticity, though. Rinsing your swimsuit in cold water after every wear and drying it in the shade will help it hold both its shape and its size much longer.
